And On The Third Day…

And on the third day, this runner woke up feeling less than ideal, tired but not defeated. Today is the official Day 3 of the MODRUN and I’m feeling the effect of all the exercise I’ve done this week. I ran on Monday too so today is really day 4 for me and today my muscles ache. Actually, I have the bodyache feeling that only exercise and stretching can cure. So although my head hurts, my legs ache, my feet are crying, I am going to run a quick mile to tell the old muscles that I AM THE BOSS. ME! I decide whether we run or not, not my muscles. Not today. And today, I choose to continue the MODRUN streak.

Paul shared an article with me about why running can shorten the life span. The gist of the article is that high mileage runners, which the writer defined as those who run more than 2 and a half hours per week, suffer from the same kinds of heart conditions as those who don’t run. The article is based on research that was presented to the American College of Cardiology recently. I could see this, especially today when I am feeling the stress that running has put on my body, but I aim for temperance in all things.

“Too much of ANYthing is good for NOthing”

is something they say in Jamaica and I’ve always stood behind that idiom. Even if you need to make radical changes, moderation is always best. Small, manageable steps, and aim for moderate, instead of extreme behavior.

My plan for dealing with my muscles is a combination of reflexology (I press points on my hands and feet to help relieve the stress in other parts of my body) and filling up on detox foods – simple, produce rich meals, with lots of  good protein to help with muscle repair. And water! Hydration is key! Flush the toxins out!

Running update, refuel and reflexology details later. See you then.

How are you doing with your running/exercise this week?

      1. Yes, I do! 🙂 I hated it during my first couple of races, it made me nervous to not work out… now I know for a fact that the extra energy will be useful on race day so I’m happy to do it.
