MODRUN Week 3 Day 4: Feelings

The weather is so unpredictable. Yesterday, the forecast was for all-day rain so I braved the morning showers and got in my 1-mile run early, getting soaked in the process.Then it rained and drizzled and stopped and down-poured and drizzled and stopped for the rest of the day. If I had waited, I might have gotten a better window to run in but you just never know.

Last night, the temperature plummeted and it snowed and surprisingly the snow stuck around until morning so that it  was 32 degrees when  I started my run. The problem with 32 degree weather is that it’s just at freezing and I never really know what to do in terms of clothes. It either feels like I am overdressed or underdressed. I decided to wear my running fleece, long tights, and skip the hat and gloves.

After a mile or so when my core warmed up, I was fine with the clothing choice but my hands were freezing – the back of my hands started feeling numb so I had to pull my sleeves down over them.

For today’s MODRUN I managed to chug out 3.4 miles although my legs felt heavy and my shin muscles are bothering me. I really need to change my shoes soon.

From today's run

I am still not up to my target pace but it’s a work-in-process.

And I just love the way I feel when I am done running – accomplished, upbeat, energetic and motivated but also light and hungry and lean.  I love the sight of the sweat on my face.

After my run when I pull out my yoga mat to stretch and do my planks, I love the sight of sweat dripping from my face to the mat, even though I was just freezing 20 minutes prior.

There is much to be said for physical activity. We were made to move yet a lot of our lives are spent sitting around, doing sedentary work and missing out on that opportunity to feel physically challenged. Sure I love meeting deadlines and getting hits on my blog, I love writing down my thoughts and having them read by others. It’s a wonderful sense of accomplishment.  But I also love the sense of accomplishment I feel when I do something physical. It’s why I smile even when the run is hard.
