It’s easy to take the road often travelled, and be caught up in the cycle of doing what you’ve always done.
When you drive on the roads in your town, you probably never hit the potholes because you know where they are and you always remember to swing and avoid them.
And that’s good.
But every now and then, you need to navigate some new roads. Have some new experiences. Fall into some new potholes because you had no idea they were there.
1. Explore. See some new things, meet some new people, so something different.
Mix up your workout routine.
Different time. Different place. Different workout buddies. Chances are your city or town is rife with new types of fitness classes to try – soul cycle, Barre, capoeira classes, Body Pump, trampoline jumping. Try it just once!
2. Eat. Try a new type of food. Ask someone about the strangest restaurant they’ve ever visited and then go there.
Not feeling quite so adventurous, try some Japanese/Jamaican fusion. Try some seaweed burgers or fried ice cream. Try it – you might like it. Or go to your nearest Whole Foods and choose something you never thought you would eat. And then eat it!
3. Challenge yourself. Make a list of 3 things you’re good at and one thing you think you suck at. Then spend some time amusing yourself with that non-skill. Think you’re a horrible artist? Buy a sketchpad and spend an hour making the worst sketches known to man.
Or, maybe you’ll surprise yourself and they won’t be that bad. Think you couldn’t put together two words that rhyme. Sit in the park and write an ode to the fading summer days. Hint: it doesn’t have to rhyme. No matter how bad your attempt, the worst that’ll happen is you spend some time amusing yourself.
Make the story as ridiculously possible as you can, and then make a pact to live a day in the life of that character.
5. Love. Do some good for someone else.
Choose an acquaintance and spend a day being the secret angel for that person. Send them flowers or candy. Slip a gift in their purse when they’re not looking. Or just invite a person you’d never think of, to go for a walk with you and treat them to some ice cream after. Just do something nice for something else. Chase that feeling you get when you’ve made someone else smile.
Let me know how it goes if you try one, or all, of the above suggestions. Or do you have another suggestion to share? I love hearing from you.
Happy Monday. Let’s make this week count!
