Top 3 Writing Tips

Last month, I wrote 50,000 words for the novel plus I wrote a blog post almost everyday. That’s a lot of writing. People have asked me “How did you do that?”

These are my top 3 tips:

  1. Plan to write everyday, even for 5 minutes. I found that if I sit to write for 5 minutes, 5 minutes can turn to 30 minutes easily. On the days that I write, I write a lot. On the days when I don’t sit down to write, nothing happens.
  2. Have tools handy. I keep my computer charger close. If I need to upload pics for my blog posts, then I need my phone and USB cords handy. When I have to get up to look for things, I tend to get distracted. It’s much easier when everything is within reach.
  3. Prepare to write everywhere. I make notes on my phone, iPad, in my notebook. Sometimes, an idea will come to me on a run so I’ll stop and type it all into my phone or send myself an email. Later, when I am writing, I might remember the idea from memory but it also helps to see the details or the brainstorming words that I wrote down then.

That’s what I do… or try to.

  1. Congratulations on your NaNoWriMo win! My biggest tip, or I should say lesson, from NaNoWriMo is to take it scene by scene. When you sit down for a writing session, before you write anything, set a small goal for where your story needs to go. Then, write toward that mark, but try not to focus too much on whether what you’re writing is any good. As long as you are heading in the right direction, any technical problems or lack of eloquence can be fixed later!

Absolutely! We should always have goals for what we do. When we are about to write, it’s no different. As a writer, plan a time limit, word count or idea development.

Do you still use these tips? Have you come up with any new strategies for 2015?

Great question. I am working on a post about that same topic. Thanks for the gentle push. 😀
