Could you fit everything you own in a single bag?
The man who wrote this article claims that he can. It’s an interesting read.
But no matter how big my bag, no matter how many times I de-clutter, I can’t say that. And I don’t think I want to. I have a wall of books that I am emotionally connected to. Okay, that’s not an entirely correct statement. But I couldn’t live with just a bag of stuff forever. When I go hiking, I can survive on a backpack of stuff for a few days. But forever is a long time. What’s in your wallet? Or purse? Two weeks ago, I bought a new purse. I’m over winter and so ready for it to be spring. Which is why I bought a new, bright purse to take me out of the dark colors of winter.
But although I love the color of my new bag (it’s called raspberry), the number one reason I bought this bag was the size. It fits on the crook of my arm which is how I usually carry my purse and it’s perfect to fit my laptop and all my daily junk, which is probably why I loved that article to begin with. I always have a full bag and the bigger the bag, the more items I think “I can’t go through today without.” But in the big picture, some of these things we convince ourselves we can’t live without…. until we find we have to live without them.
Which is why, at least a few times a year, I like to go rough it in the wild – someplace where you eat without condiments, you bathe and wash your clothes simultaneously in a stream, where you sit and think instead of reading someone else’s words, a place where there’s no need to carry a credit card because there’s nothing to buy and nowhere to buy it, where if you break a nail, you chew it off and keep it moving.
Those little breaks help to keep things in perspective but they’re breaks, an intermission of sorts, not the whole play. On a normal day, I like my stuff!
What’s in your wallet? What are the 3 things you never leave home without?
