She Must Leave

She must leave.

Her bags are packed as though she has decided but she still searches his face for a reason to unpack things that don’t matter into corners that are waiting to reclaim her.

“Leave”, he challenges. “See if I care.”
When the door eases shut behind her, she presses her limp body on it, gathering the vestiges of strength needed to follow the path she has chosen, all she owns lying forgotten and unwanted at her feet.
His tears on the other side don’t count now.
She pulls her hair forward to conceal the bruise and lets her fingers linger to remember why she must leave.

This is beautiful, Karen – in a sad, painful, wistful kind of way. My favorite line is “but she still searches his face for a reason to unpack”. Ahh, shot to the heart.
