I am chugging away at my summer list. Item number 15 of the list I shared yesterday includes leaning to play tennis. Side note: I’ve had my racquet for more years than I care to admit without knowing how to play the sport well. I need lessons!
Day 1 of tennis lessons saw me struggling just to catch the ball. It’s interesting how we spend the first few years of our lives developing and mastering our motor skills, but if we abandon them, they all but disappear and you have to relearn them like a baby but you’re so old, it’s embarrassing. This is not simple! Turns out hitting a ball with a racquet is not as easy as it seems when Serena Williams dominates on TV.
Two hours spent chasing a springy, little yellow ball, outdoors on a summer evening left me exhausted but exhilarated. And excited to do it again!
Cross training is more important than we probably realize. It’s vital to do more than just one thing all the time. And then there’s the little issue of calories. Turns out a vigorous game of tennis can burn upwards of 500 calories per hour. What!?!
Day 2 was even harder. Beginner’s luck gone! And Hello sore muscles! But now, I’m watching tennis instructional videos on YouTube to better my form. And visualizing myself getting better. (Seriously, is there anything you can’t learn on YouTube?)
If I could offer you one bit of advice, it would be to spend some time this summer trying something new. And while you’re at it, wear sunscreen!
What’s the most interesting thing you’re planning to learn this summer?
