On December 1st, I decided to start a decluttering challenge. I didn’t know how it was going to go with all the other things I’m doing this month but
- It was time to get some of my stuff out of the house and I needed room for all the extra stuff that comes along with Christmas shopping and gift-making etc. (I’m assembling gifts for a project at church and storing some of those things for delivery feels like it was taking over my room so I definitely needed to free up some extra space.)
- My Mom always cleans the entire house in preparation for the New Year. What better way to clean than to get rid of lots of stuff – less things to clean, which is a win-win.
The guidelines for the challenge (hosted by So Damn Domestic) are simple, start off on Day 1 by getting rid of 30 things, on day 2, throw out 29 things, day 3 is 28 items in the trash/recycling, etc.
Here’s how I’m doing so far.
Day 4: I have lots of spare hangers now that I gave away some clothes
Day 5: I don’t drink this so I’m not sure how long it’s been hanging around. The packages aren’t even open.
Day 6: I put these shopping bags into the donation bag for the church. Somebody might appreciate having a cure shopping bag to hold the stuff they get.
Day 7,8 and 9 – lets just say this was more than the requisite number but I don’t have any use for these picnic things in my kitchen. I really don’t like disposable utensils.
On Day 10 I threw out some hair rollers which I don’t use now that I have natural hair and I’m staying away from heat styling
Day 11: my purse can always stand to be decluttered. I had a bunch of old receipts hanging out in my wallet dating back to the summer. Why!?!
Day 12: I found almost that much in duck sauce alone hiding out in my fridge. Hot Sauce! You hear me Chinese restaurant people. I only want hot sauce!
Day 13: Time to purge my Avon bag. Lots of old brochures to part with
Day 14: I gave up on ever finding the sole-mate for these socks that got separated in the laundry
Day 15: I’ve been saving old MetroCards since they started charging for them but… at what point does this become hoarding? Time to let it go
So that was the first 15 days. How you’ll come back to see what I’m letting go of for the rest of the year.
How fun! I did this last month because I had to clear out my storage unit and move so I was like I definitely need to declutter! I’ve always had a hard time getting rid of items so I started looking up tips online and found So Damn Domestic! I had no idea there was support for decluttering so I was pretty excited to join the challenge! I missed some days but made them up and ended on a great note! 😀 I had a yard sale the first weekend of December to get rid of all the items. I made about $200 and got rid of 14 boxes of things. Whatever I didn’t sell I donated right away. Plus I threw out a lot while decluttering. I think its such a great challenge and you should join the facebook group if you haven’t already! Cheering you on!

Thanks Caroline. I was really motivated when I read about this on your blog so thank you for pushing me in this direction in the first place.
A yard sale sounds fun. Maybe I should organize one too.

Yea. It was tiring but it helped. I sold things extremely cheap though (clothes for 50/25 cents) and had a few items that were like $10 or so.
