Looking Back At May 2016 

What if I fall? Oh but darling, what if you fly?

It’s a popularly quoted exchange, one questioning her abilities, the other encouraging her to try anyway. Sometimes, those two perspectives bounce around in my head. Maybe the goals I set for myself are too lofty. Maybe my expectations are unrealistic to begin with.

Steve Harvey says if you’re hitting all your goals, then your dreams are too small. There should be something on your vision board that’s next to impossible to attain. I’m not meeting all (or even most) of my goals. But they keep me inspired, they keep me pressing forward. At the end of May, here’s where I am with these benchmarks I set for myself this year

Reading

May was a big month for acquiring books. I bought 4 and got 2 free Non-Fiction reads so I added these 6 beauties to my shelf.

One of the best experiences I had in May was meeting JoJo Moyes at a book signing and getting my own autographed copy of her beautifully-written book, Me Before You.

  • Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker
  • Are You Smart Enough To Work At Google by William Poundstone

  • David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell

It’s safe to say my reading goals are well underway. So far, I’ve read 41 of the 100 books I plan to read this year and I’m right on track.

How am I progressing with my other goals? Well, let’s see.

Running/ Health and Fitness

  • Running has taken a definite backseat in the last few months and I am struggling to get back into it. There just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to go for a run. Which is why a couple weeks ago, I started running early mornings or late evenings. That’s how I used to fit it into my schedule before so I just have to go back to what works.
  • I lost some weight and then gained it all back and now am working on losing it healthily again – it’s harder than I thought it would be.

Financial

  • I didn’t realize any of my financial goals but I am still actively pursuing them.

Writing

  • In May, I released the Kindle version of It’s Complicated: Short Stories About Long Relationships. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Amazon doesn’t give much feedback on how it’s doing so I can track the daily downloads but from the people who’ve contacted me and told me they’re reading it, I know it’s doing well.
  • All other writing goals are lagging behind
  • Suffice it to say, I did not acquire an agent or score a book deal in May. I would’ve told you about it if I had.
  • My blog-friend, Kay wrote this awesome post about my book.

Spiritual

  • I took another class towards getting a certification through Church
  • I’ve been slacking on the Bible Reading Plan. Have to pick it back up

Blog and Social Media

  • I had 1117 IG followers at the end of April and 1197 at the end of May. If I could keep people from un-following me, I would probably be at my goal already 🙂
  • I’m at 774 followers, up from 690 in April

Travel

  • I barely left the state in May. Sad times for a wanderluster like myself.
  • I’m focusing on a July trip to the South and Christmas ’16 in Jamaica

When to dig your well

If I could turn back the hands of time, what would I change in May? I wish I had spent more time with my youth-group kids but I am looking forward to spending time with them this summer.

What is my one lesson from May that I’m applying to June? Get more exercise, even if it’s in small increments
