NYC Marathon Lawsuit

I got an email today that puzzled and excited me. It came from the NYRR (New York Road Runners) group, the organization that runs the New York City Marathon. For several years, I have applied to get into the lottery. If you don’t know, there are way more people applying to run than they can allow to participate so they accept entries and a select few (and by few I mean 50,000) who get to run on race day. I’ve been applying since maybe 2008, most years not seriously because I’ve never completed training for it, but if I did get accepted, I would run or walk or hop or crawl or whatever it took to get to the finish line.

Anyway, today I got an email from NYRR that said there is a class action lawsuit regarding said lottery and that depending on the results, previous lottery entrants might get accepted into the next event and be credited. I don’t know the details but this is exciting.

Has anyone else received a similar email?

  1. I received this email too, but I knew it was coming. The 2 guys who sued are from my state and I remember hearing a lot about it originally. I actually wasn’t really too keen on their reasons for sueing, basically they were just bitter they didn’t get in, but still had to pay a fee to be considered for the lottery, I can’t remember all the details but depending on the year you registered you’ll get $1,25 – $11 credit for the processing fee’s they may have previously taken. If I lived in NYC, I’d probably apply for it because $11 is $11, penny saved penny earned, LOL. But since I am not, I think I’ll let them keep my funds or spread them out however it was agreed to do it, LOL If your planning on running again, hope you get the full $11 🙂

I agree with you, Kristy. I am not happy about suing because you didn’t get in. That doesn’t sound like grounds for a lawsuit but if there’s a ruling that helps my chances of getting in the marathon, I’ll take it and if I do get a credit, I’ll make sure I use it for good. I haven’t renewed my NYRR membership in a couple years because I wasn’t doing any races but I’ve been planning to start doing that again in 2017.

  2. I had heard about this.

Good luck…surely something to be excited about.

If I ever run a marathon NYC and Chicago would be the ones I would want to do for sure.

  3. Perhaps this is the exact motivation you need to make 2017 be the year!

It seemed to be a bit of sour grapes to me. I have won the lottery for the Half marathon and I have lost plenty of times but it is nothing to get upset about, IMO.

Agreed. I would never think of suing NYRR for something like not getting in the marathon, especially when there are so many other ways to run.

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.
