I once heard someone say, It is in our differences that we are significant. What do we bring to the table that no one else has? What makes us unique? What makes us special? When the new president was assembling his team, he didn’t look for a bunch of people that were exactly like him? Sure, they had to have things in common, shared policies and what not, but each one was selected because of some unique contribution that they could make. It was their differences that made them special.
Notice how your eyes automatically travel to the flower on the right, even though it’s not in the place where you should naturally look? Why? That’s because that flower is so different from the others around it. At first glance, it seems to have more petals than its neighbors. It doesn’t. It just appears different because it petals are more colored than white. It is in our differences that we are significant.
I think we spend too much of time trying to be just like other people instead of celebrating our differences. Like me, sometimes I want to apologize for things that I don’t do like everyone else. I want to keep my differences a secret because I am afraid you won’t understand? accept? love me? But it is those exact differences that make me significant. You’re probably here for those differences, if only I would share them.
I’m going to keep working on that.
What do you do differently and are you sharing it?
