My 13 year-old friend got her summer reading list from the high school she’ll be attending in the fall. Those of you who are literature experts can tell me what you think of this list for teens. I’ve only read a few of them although I’ll be adding them to my TBR to prepare me for the forthcoming discussions. Please weigh in on the discussion in the comments below.

Yes! I think so. The faster she reads these important books, the more time she has to explore her other interests and just do some fun reading, because you know you have to have fun reading.

What I like about this is the variety – particularly the variety in publication date and the variety in genre and experience. I think it’s a bit long, but the school must have very high expectation of its students, which I applaud. I’m familiar with most of the texts. In eleven years of teaching self-professed non-readers, I’ve only had one student give Part-Time Indian back to me. There’s a maturity level required for navigating parts of the text, but it’s also your quintessential fish-out-of-water story. (That one is my favorite on this list, hence the commentary.)
