If you’re running through the summer because…
- you’re training for a winter marathon or a half marathon in the fall
- you’re doing a running streak
- you’ve taken up the #ToughGirlChallenge to run 100 miles before September 17
- you’re outrunning the health problems that seem to accompany a sedentary lifestyle or
- you’re still trying to get to your summer body even though the solstice is tomorrow (seriously, how did we get here this fast!)…
Whatever your reason to run through these really warm days, you’re going to need some gear. Personally, my reasons for running frequently are all of the above which means I am running everyday now and really trying to run as fast as I can. These days, it feels like the sun rises at about 4:00 a.m. which means it’s already pretty warm when I go outside at 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. In fact, I am often drenched with sweat a mile into the run so good running gear is essential for me and it might be for you too.

I really like these running tanks because the more openings for my skin to breathe, the better. Even though the picture below shows a black tank, I actually have a purple one.
Good sports bras are always necessary. I think a good supportive bra is the number one most important item of running gear for ladies, yes even over running shoes. And I know some ladies buy colorful ones so they can skip the tank altogether in the summer. I’m not that risqué but I do have these lime green ones in my drawers.
I use to run in capris or longer tights because I hated when my shorts would ride up my legs during the run. (Read The Attack of the Terrible Tights) Then I discovered these middy shorts that are perfect for summer running. These Under Armour Women’s HeatGear Armour Middy have a non-chafing lining so they don’t ride up or move around when you’re running and they’re compression tight to smooth out anything you wish was a little less bumpy.
When it comes to sneakers, I am all about minimalism in my shoes because I believe that when you’re putting it all on the road, the last thing you want weighing you down is heavy shoes. I just got new orange Nike trainers, similar to the Nike Women’s Flex Supreme, and I love them.
I sweat a lot – sometimes, I think it’s too much – so I am always concerned with replacing electrolytes after a warm-weather run. part of my refueling regimen is bananas in my oatmeal, or coconut water or I dissolve these Nuun Hydration Tablets in my water.
This morning, I went running. It’s day 32 of the daily workout challenge that I started a few weeks ago with my virtual running-buddy. Weekend schedules are a little less predictable so our challenge is only for weekdays. My goal today was 2.25 miles and I cleared 2.3 miles to Central Park and back even though it was already pretty warm outside.
Looking back at where I’m coming from on Day 1, I have to say, having good running gear definitely helps make it easier to keep chasing my goals.
