Book Blogger Hop

You know they say don’t judge a book by the cover but do you ever judge a person by their book collection? Today, I’m joining the Book Blogger Hop where the question of the day is:

When you enter an unfamiliar house or apartment for the first time, do you feel disappointed if you don’t see any bookshelves, or books on the coffee table? (submitted by Maria @ A Night’s Dream of Books)

My answer:

I don’t go to a lot of unfamiliar homes but if I made a new friend and went to their house, I would expect to see at least a few books around – religious books depending on that person’s belief system, a couple of residual textbooks if the person had been a student in the last decade or so, or even a few kids books or comics kept for nostalgic reasons. A lot of people don’t buy and keep the books they read, especially given the outstanding public library system that exists in New York, but even the person who borrows most of their reading material, I think would have a couple books around that they hadn’t returned yet.

So going to someone’s home and not seeing at least those few books would be a little strange for me but that’s not the question right? The question is would I be disappointed? Yes! Absolutely, after our initial conversation, my eyes would wander, downcast and I would be sad at the lack of book company. Please, if you invite me to your house, even if you’re not an avid reader, put a book around for me to flip through during the down time in our conversations. I will probably have my own reading material (there is almost always a book in my purse or an ebook on my phone) but I love seeing the books that people collect. I enjoy the novelty of finding a title that I’ve never seen, a genre that I’ve never tried, an atlas with tabs marking the places you’ve been, museum copies for the art exhibits you’ve visited, a coffee table book about the subjects you find most interesting and signed copies of books where you’ve met the author. Visiting your house and not having those experiences would, indeed, be a little disappointing for me.

What about you? Would you be disappointed if you visited someone’s house and didn’t see a book collection to peruse?

I would definitely be kind of disappointed if I didn’t see a book collection but on the other hand I do know that not all people enjoy reading (unfortunately!).

  2. I’m thinking about our own house and we have our bookshelves downstairs and kind of tucked away. So I think if I went over to someone’s house and didn’t see any books, I’d just think they were hiding somewhere!

    1. But on that note, if I found out that they actually didn’t have any books, I would be disappointed!

LOVE your answer! I’m glad I’m not the only one who would feel disappointed when visiting a new friend, and not seeing any books in their living room! It would also feel a little strange. There are people who are just not into books, though. I think that’s sad, but then, everybody’s different. Then there are those who either prefer e-books, or just borrow library books. However, as you say, I would still expect to see books around, if they hadn’t returned them to the library yet.

I TOTALLY agree with this quote from your answer: ” I enjoy the novelty of finding a title that I’ve never seen, a genre that I’ve never tried, an atlas with tabs marking the places you’ve been, museum copies for the art exhibits you’ve visited, a coffee table book about the subjects you find most interesting and signed copies of books where you’ve met the author.” WOW!! What an AWESOME statement!! YES!!! Seeing books like these would make me SO happy!!
