Do you know someone who’s succeeded where you’ve failed – if he offered you advice, you’d probably listen, right? If a business mogul who’s sold several billion dollars worth of his product tells you how to get ready for a sales pitch, you would probably listen if you had something to sell too. If in his advice, he suggests that you get up early every morning, make small goals and work on each one, and don’t stop until you’ve accomplished what you want, then maybe you should at least try it out, no matter that you think you’ve heard it before and there’s nothing special to what he’s saying.
Daymond John is the author of several books, including The Power of Broke: How Empty Pockets, a Tight Budget, and a Hunger for Success Can Become Your Greatest Competitive Advantage In that one, he explained that a new entrepreneur with a great idea has the advantage of not having much to lose and everything to gain. That hunger to sell your first item because you need the money to buy food, that he calls the power of broke and says it is the reason he doesn’t often invest in small businesses – injecting too much capital investment in a new product can hurt the rising entrepreneur much more than it can help. I read that book last year and was inspired by his words. This year, the FUBU creator and Shark Tank investor is sharing more insight, but this time, it’s some tricks from his own working life as well as tips from other successful entrepreneurs. Rise and Grind: Outperform, Outwork, and Outhustle Your Way to a More Successful and Rewarding Life is a compendium of the habits these successful entrepreneurs honed while they were trying to build their businesses and the habits they continue to keep growing.
In Rise and Grind, ultra successful CEO and mogul Daymond John interviews and shares tips from other people across the spectrum of success – actress and lifestyle brand entrepreneur Catherine Zeta Jones, Brian Lee who’s the lawyer who started LegalZoom and Shoe Dazzle, Nely Galan who is the woman behind the success of Telemundo, Kyle Maynard who was born without arms or legs but who has scaled Kilimanjaro and Joel Osteen, probably the most well known pastor on the planet – about how they became successful and what they do to keep rising. I liked the format of the book where John interspersed these third party stories with vignettes from his own experiences as well as the web address included at the end of each checklist that links to quote cards from each celebrity guests that you can use for a vision board or post on social media to inspire someone else with their powerful words. Rise and Grind includes advice for accomplishing work, relationship, spiritual and health goals and is both general enough and specific enough for almost anyone to connect with.
Often with books like this, I’ll power through the first 50 pages or so, get the gist of what the author is saying and skip on the rest but John’s particular brand of story telling kept me reading for the entire 300 pages. That’s saying a lot for me. He even includes a call to action as a bonus for making it to the end. Like he says it, there is no single route for everyone so the G-R-I-N-D acronym might mean something different for each of us as we work towards achieving our life’s purpose. And in his final words, the CEO invites readers to take ownership of the material and share how we are going to apply the template for our own lives – tweet him so he can repost and encourage.
