Rancher’s Dream by B J Daniels

I grew up seeing my mother’s enjoyment of Harlequin romance novels but even though I got my love of reading fiction from her, I never got immersed in that genre… not until I found the Montana Cahills series from author, B. J. Daniel. The most recent installment in the series is  Rancher’s Dream but any of these books can be read as a standalone. The saga follows the adult members of the Cahill family, led by their loopy father, Ely, who’s convinced he was once abducted by aliens and now lives in the Montana mountains, secure from the government conspiratorial cover-up. Then there’s Flint, the brother who’s town sheriff and who’s this close to arresting one of his siblings in each installment – last time, it was Tucker, who disappeared about twenty years ago right after his girlfriend died, and finally returned just as the remains were discovered. Other family members are Maggie who fell in love in Book 1 and who’s now a first-time mother and another sister, Lillie, whose best friend Deidre just got married, although her romance with Hawk is far from over. At the end of this installment, Hawk’s twin brother Cyrus, will be the only sibling left single so he has to be next and that realization certainly amplifies my anticipation for the next book.

But as to Hawk’s story – he and Deirdre were high school and college sweetheart until a secret broke them up. Later, Deirdre, or Drey as everyone calls her, gets swept into a whirlwind romance with New York businessman Ethan Baxter who offers her “every girl’s dream life”, just not the vision she had for herself. She quits her librarian job and marries this dream guy eight months after meeting him, expecting to move into his New York City penthouse and a new life that is far away from her childhood memories and all that remained of her relationship with Hawke. But after the wedding, her new husband installs her in a monstrosity of a house back in her Montana hometown and disappears on their wedding night. Added to that, Ethan’s brother Jet turns up instead, a brother Drey didn’t even know existed and she is forced to reconcile whether he can be trusted to help her solve the mystery of Ethan’s whereabouts or whether Jet is part of the problem. Especially with not just her husband’s disappearance but also the case of the missing thumb, the missing mouse, the missing moments of the past few days and a host of other reasons for Drey to start doubting her sanity. That is, of course, until Hawke helps give her a reason to remember.

Now I don’t support adulterous romances, am not even thrilled by fictional ones but the twists and turns of this story will elicit interest, empathy and even applause.

Within each installment, storylines from earlier novels get revisited and loose ends get tied up even as new threads are unspooled for future books. Bar cook Billie-Dee hoping to reunite with the daughter she gave up for adoption, Ashley Jo, the young woman who appeared mysteriously but who has assimilated in the family you’d think she was related,

All in all, author B.J. Daniels spins a good yarn with characters you will admire and root for with the reckless abandon these cowboys deserve, and makes her one of my favorite writers in this genre.
