Happy New Year! If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say, I can’t believe it’s a new year already, I’d be rich. In fact, by the time you’re reading this, 2019 would be at least a day old. Nevertheless, I thought I would take some time at the beginning of the brand new year to reflect on the one that has just concluded and plan for the one ahead.
At the beginning of last year, I set some goals and established some benchmarks for myself. Along the way, I made a lot of adjustments, some willingly, some because I hadn’t laid the right groundwork and I had to acknowledge that they wouldn’t be realized.
Some of my big accomplishments in 2018 were that I started a brand new relationship, got engaged, planned a wedding in less than 2 months and got married. I moved house, even if I am still unpacking and getting sorted. I worked with a lot of students in various capacities and saw most of them succeed. I wrote a lot, even if I didn’t publish a book. I made some new friends and reconnected with some old ones. Overall, I didn’t get some of the number goals I was reaching for – online followers, amount in savings, etc. but those are some of the things I can work harder to accomplish in 2019.
This year, I’ve been thinking about one word to sum up what I want to do and so far, I’ve come up with create (which is similar to my 2017 word) so I’m still mulling it over but I am 99% sure CREATE is my 2019 word.
A few years ago, I heard a very well-known pastor say that we are most like God when we create , when we use or gifts, talents and abilities to make things that didn’t exist before, whether they are experiences or art. Yesterday, I listened to someone else talk about not just seizing opportunities but creating opportunities. There are so many ways to think about the word create and I’ll share more later.
What about you? Have you chosen a word for the year?
