Yacov Morad’s book Beyond Grapes is a beautiful invitation into a world of wines and liqueurs created using fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices or almost any plant you can imagine, except grapes. Morad’s passion and creativity comes through in these recipes, in the simplicity of the presentation and the step-by-step outline with which the details are communicated. Reading this book makes wine-making and liqueur preparation seem really appealing – for the simplicity and for what can be achieved.
The book begins with a foreword by Yacov Morad where he relates getting interested in winemaking from watching his father and making his first wine at age 12, later presenting a bottle of homemade wine to his future father-in-law at their first meeting and subsequently learning from him about the varieties that could be possible. Beyond Grapes, then, is the intersection of two family legacies, decades of experimentation and the wealth of experience being shared in simple recipes that the reader can follow and learn from to not just copy but to create unique liqueurs at home. There are dozens of recipes included in this book, arranged in sections to focus on the plant being used to make them . So there are Fruit and Vegetable Liqueurs and combinations of the two, Specialty Liqueurs, and even Homemade Moonshine. Each recipe is accompanied by two beautiful photographs – one showing the fruit / vegetable / spice being infused into the alcohol; the other is the finished product, complete with garnish suggestions.
I really enjoyed flipping through this book and would recommend Beyond Grapes to anyone who enjoys tasting unique concoctions because I think this book gives not just recipes but ideas for how you can experiment and truly make these liqueurs your own.
Note: I received a complimentary copy of Beyond Grapes from TLC Book Tours in order to complete this review. I was not otherwise compensated and the above reflects my honest opinion about the book.
