Adventure. Lessons Learned. Relationships.
While Bear Grylls’ new autobiography, Never Give Up focuses on these three themes, the short chapters make it such that readers can start anywhere in the book and quickly glean the benefit of those lessons learned, be introduced to a family member or celebrity and accompany Bear on some hair-raising adventure. Each chapter does end with a segue that is taken up in the next one so there is benefit (and enjoyment) from reading the narrative as it appears. At the beginning, he briefly recaps some of the messages he shared in his first book – Mud, Sweat and Tears was Bear telling the lesser known stories of his life before the breakout show – but in this one, he builds on those experiences, sharing some of the behind-the scenes of his successful show and the impact it has had on his method and process.
In recounting some of his grossest adventures, like the one where he eats a goat testicle, Bear mentions that, “there is something about the camera’s blinking red light that helps me do the difficult. It means we’re on, we’re green to go, and it’s time to deliver.” We are just 15 pages into the book when this story is recounted but by then, Bear has already discussed two instances of him drinking his own urine and now swallowing goat’s sperm. Certainly, this book is certainly not for the faint of heart. While the stories in Never Give Up are wild, they are insanely riveting and the short chapters make the book easy to read and hard to put down.
As someone who considers themselves an outdoor enthusiast, Grylls’ stories top any experience I have ever had and ever hope to have. His tales almost seem to out-there except you know there is footage to support almost every claim and if you’ve watched one episode of his show, this book will answer both the questions you wanted to ask and the ones you didn’t know you had about his team members’ roles on location, the most memorable moments from all his adventures as well as Bear’s cautions for the readers/viewers, like me, who never want to be caught in the situations he memorializes here.
Note: I received a complimentary copy of the book from National Geographic Publishers through a publicity tour organized by Trish of TLC Book Tours. I was not otherwise compensated and the above review reflects my honest opinion abut the book.
