Peek-A-You by Andrea and Brian Pinkney | Book Review

As the mother of a toddler, I have read A LOT of baby board books in the past two and a half years. And I really savored this one because it starts and ends with messages for the parent, reminders to savor the moments that reading books together can provide.

The illustrations are gorgeous caricature images of brown-skinned babies playing alone as well as with adults, a spin on the Peek-A-Boo game, replacing the scary word with the precious subject:YOU. I like that the book represents both genders, showing babies playing with both mother and father figures, something I think is important for children to see on the pages. The lines of the book contain words that the young reader hears repeatedly each day – action words like STOMP and SHOUT and SING and LOOK, but also objects and descriptive words like YOU and BABY and CUTE so this book is another tool in helping children learn to identify the words as they start their own reading journey.

I read this one aloud with my daughter a few times and then found her reading it herself, which warms my heart because I imagine she sees herself in this book, and isn’t that the objective of our read-aloud sessions, to get her to love reading herself! This book certainly helps that process along.
