Secrets From The Heart by Sean D. Young | Book Review

on

Small town. Strong Families. Military Profiles. Workplace Romance. Soul Music. This book has a lot of the elements I enjoy reading about. Maybe you love to find those things in novels too.

Publisher’s Synopsis

Yet attraction still sparks between them, proving to ex–army engineer Franklin there’s something real beneath the surface. Something hopeful. Something unmistakable. But pursuing Kira could prove dangerous for a man with an uncertain future.

Taking over her family’s charming and historic Red Rose Inn is a dream for Kira Davis—even if it means the extra stress of knowing the entire Davis clan is watching her every move. But ignoring her family’s wishes and hiring too-handsome Franklin Bennett as her temporary new manager might be a huge mistake…given their families’ decades-long feud.

Now Kira and Franklin are caught between an ancient family feud and their feelings for each other. The only way they can love each other is by unraveling the terrible truth about what happened back then…and hope that love is strong enough to mend the break from so long ago.

My Review

I love that the story begins right away with an introduction to the main characters, Kira and Franklin, showing her reaction to hearing his voice on a phone message, then a reflection on their earlier meeting and then again as they run into each other in person. The story moves back and forth between Kira and Franklin’s perspectives, but doing it seamlessly as the reader follows the story’s advancement. There is an exploration of past hurts, digging up family history that heals old wounds as it creates the potential for new ones, but it all makes for delightful reading.

While the characters are people of color living in Tennessee, the focus isn’t on race and the story is one that could probably happen to people from whatever background, and thus is very relatable. However, there is wonderful depiction of Black culture – music (Franklin being named after Queen of Soul Aretha and her music being referenced throughout the book, almost like a soundtrack piping in at various scenes); food (with recipes included at the back of the book).

Sean D. Young gives her readers a lot to enjoy in Secrets From The Heart and I highly recommend this one.

Note: I received a complimentary copy of Secrets From The Heart from the publishes and TLC Book Tours in order to complete this review. I was not otherwise compensated and the above reflects my honest opinion
